Preparing for College and Scholarship Applications By Grade
Far too often students and parents fail to properly prepare for the college application process by the time they begin applying in the fall of senior year. Not only should you begin preparing prior to senior year, preparation should begin as early as 8th grade! Preparing for the application process includes strategic high school course selection, participation in school organizations, extra-curricular activities as well as test prep courses and school visits.
Below is a grade-specific guide with five tips for each grade to help students and parents navigate the college and scholarship application process.
8th Grade
- Set Academic Foundations:
Develop strong study habits and time management skills to ensure good grades in high school. Focus on core subjects and consider honors or advanced placement (AP) options for future coursework. - Explore Interests:
Identify hobbies, clubs, or extracurricular activities that align with potential college interests. Begin building a well-rounded profile. - Learn About College Requirements:
Research college admission requirements and scholarships to understand expectations, helping with future course planning. - Build Relationships with Teachers:
Get to know your teachers and learn how to seek help. Positive relationships will be crucial for future recommendations. - Start a Portfolio:
Begin documenting achievements, awards, and activities to keep an organized record for future applications. Pro tip: get a 6 in 3-ring binder and index dividers.
9th Grade
- Choose Challenging Courses:
